Site 13 in Kazimierza Wielka is situated on a small loess erosion remnant in the Nidzica River valley (fig.
1, 2). Archaeological excavations conducted prior to the construction of the town’s bypass revealed settlement pits (7) and one or more inhumation graves. Shallow clay pits, identified as features 5, 22, and 84–86, are located at the highest point of the site, along its eastern border. In proximity, approximately 25 meters to the west, a grave was revealed (feature 72), while a shallow pit (feature 43) is situated 33 meters southwest of this group. The collection of Malice culture pottery unearthed at the site includes amphorae, biconical vessels, pots, pear-shaped beakers, and bowls, some with a hollow feet. Establishing the chronology of the Malice culture settlement in Kazimierza Wielka relies on stylistic analysis and formal features of pottery. While the set of forms, potter techniques, and decorative motifs is not highly diverse, it enables the distinction of two settlement phases. Decorated pear-shaped cups characterize the classical phase (Phase Ib following S. Kadrow 1990; 2006). Radiocarbon date yielded for grave 72 is 5620±35 BP (Poz-134512), which upon calibration aligns with the years 4493–4369 BC with a 68.3% probability. The presence of horn-shaped ears assigns feature 100 to Phase Ic in Kadrow’s classification (1991; 2006).
The Malice culture grave(s) and the settlement in Kazimierza Wielka are positioned on the eastern periphery of the Malice settlement enclave near Kraków. Undoubtedly, this region served as a stable settlement system within the broader Malice culture domain.
