Kazimierza Wielka is located on the Proszowice Plateau, a part of the Nida Basin, within the Lesser Poland
Upland. The bedrock in this region consists of a dense layer of Miocene marine deposits overlying marls and Cretaceous formations. These sediments are covered by a substantial mantle of Quaternary deposits. The uppermost layers comprise Vistulian loess, as well as Holocene alluvial soils and peat deposits in the river valleys. The soil cover is dominated by fertile chernozems. Site 12 is situated on a vast loess promontory extending into the Małoszówka River valley, presently located in the city centre of Kazimierza Wielka. The area encompassing Kazimierza Wielka and its neighbourhood is notable for its dense concentration of prehistoric and early historic settlements. At site 12, a well-preserved mound of uncertain chronology is present; however, materials associated with the Linear Pottery culture were recorded in this location during earlier research. In 2022, a research team from “Pryncypat Marcin
Przybyła” company, in collaboration with Dr J. Zagórska-Telega from the Institute of Archaeology at Jagiellonian University, conducted rescue excavations at this site. The investigations continued on a smaller scale in 2023 and 2024. As a result of this fieldwork, a total of 136 archaeological features were identified. These features are attributed to the Malice culture, the Funnel Beaker-Baden phase, the Corded Ware culture, the Mierzanowice culture, the Trzciniec culture, and the Roman Period. The materials recovered during the research formed the basis of a study co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (task 1097/23: “Kazimierza Wielka – from a Neolithic settlement to a Roman Period cemetery”), as part of the government programme “Protection of Archaeological Heritage”, managed by the National Institute of Cultural Heritage. Besides the authors of the subsequent chapters, Katarzyna Ciomek, Kamila Gubała, Michał Podsiadło, Stanisław Rupiński, Urszula Socha, and Błażej Szojda contributed to processing the data and analysing the archaeological materials. Their work included the reconstruction of ceramic forms, photography and drawings of artefacts, as well as the preparation of maps, plans, and other technical activities associated with the prepared publication.
