Bronze Age hoards of metal artefacts have been the focus of Professor Wojciech Blajer’s interest since the early days of his academic career. This is why his scientific pupils, friends and colleagues, among them renowned European scholars specializing in the Bronze Age archaeology, decided to devote him a jublee book focused on this topic. The collection is presented to the reader as 22 papers, in which hoards and the interpretation of the phenomenon of hoarding are analysed at different levels and from different perspectives. The volume opens with Part One: Hoards as a multifaceted phenomenon in Bronze and Early Iron Age Euope, a group of studies which, referring to phenomena repetitively recorded in Bronze and Iron Age hoards or to changes in cultural picture related with hoarding, address anew the long discussed issue of the reasons behind burying deposits of metal objects. Part Two: Hoards from regional perspectives considers analyses of individual hoards, or their groups, performed from the perspective of archaeology of selected regions of Europe, from the Carpathian Basin to northern Poland. Part Three: Inside a hoard – focus on a single assemblage comprises analyses of selected deposits, including those which focus on the reconstruction of the deposition process. This brings the reader back to the issue of interpretation of hoards, addressed in the first part of the book, although this time the issue is approached from a much more holistic and particular perspective. While in parts two and three hoards are discussed in the context of the place of their discovery, in the last part (Part Four: Beyond hoards – focus on a single find category) the emphasis is placed on their formal rather than regional contexts. This part is a compilation of texts on selected categories of metal objects, with a focus on their occurrence in hoards. Biographical note and an account of the presentation of the volume
Od początku swojej kariery naukowej Wojciech Blajer koncentrował się na problematyce gromadnych znalezisk przedmiotów metalowych z epoki brązu. Z tego powodu czterdziestą rocznicę Jego pracy naukowej grono uczniów, współpracowników i kolegów postanowiło uczcić skompletowaniem tomu poświęconemu właśnie tym zagadnieniom. W prezentowanym zbiorze znalazły się 22 artykuły, które podchodzą do problematyki skarbów i interpretacji zjawiska ich deponowania na różnych poziomach analizy. Tom otwiera grupa prac, które odnosząc się do zjawisk obserwowanych powtarzalnie w skarbach z epok brązu i żelaza lub też do towarzyszących ich zmian w obrazie kulturowym podejmują na nowo dyskutowane od dawna zagadnienie przyczyn masowego niekiedy występowania depozytów przedmiotów metalowych (część: Hoards as a multifaceted phenomenon…). Następną część książki tworzą omówienia pojedynczych skarbów, lub też ich grup w perspektywie archeologii wybranych regionów Europy, od Kotliny Karpackiej do Skandynawii (część: Hoards from regional perspectives). Trzecia część monografii (Inside a hoard…) grupuje opracowania wybranych depozytów, między innymi takie, w których nacisk został położony na próbę odtworzenia procesu depozycji. Ta grupa studiów powraca do podjętego w partii pierwszej zagadnienia interpretacji skarbów, podchodząc jednak do niego ze znacznie bardziej holistycznej i partykularnej perspektywy. O ile w części drugiej i trzeciej skarby omawiane są w odniesieniu do miejsca ich zdeponowania, o tyle w części ostatniej (Beyond hoards…) nacisk położony jest na ich formalny, a nie regionalny kontekst. Stanowi ona kolekcję tekstów dotyczących wybranych kategorii zabytków metalowych, ze szczególnym naciskiem na ich występowanie w gromadnych depozytach.
